Guide Review - Artimus Pyle - Artimus Venomus
"I'm a drummer, not a singer," says former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer, Artimus "Wild Man" Pyle. "I couldn't ask anyone else to sing the words I've written."
Doubtless, any number of artists would jump at the chance to sing a song titled "Blood Sucking Weasel Attorneys" but Pyle's point is well taken. The album is the product of a three year long effort to purge himself of the anger and resentment that he has built up towards his former bandmates. It is a very personal album.
Musically, the album is alternately dark and light, fast and slow, meaningful and whimsical. Like the classic concept albums by the likes of Pink Floyd and The Who, there is a theme, a cast of characters, and musical and verbal bridges that connect each song to the next.
It's clear that Pyle holds the late Ronnie Van Zant (Skynyrd's leader until his death in a 1977 plane crash) in high regard. "Ronnie Van Zant was a man of integrity," says Pyle, but he has no qualms about taking thinly veiled shots at Van Zant's widow ("Dead Rock Stars' Widows, Gigolos, Pocket Money") and brother ("Spit") in his lyrics.
The venom in the lyrics may make you a little uncomfortable, but the concept, the production and the musicianship make this a worthwhile addition to the collection.
